Mon, 16 November 2009 I don't know what the Hell the problem with the Pamela recording software is. But I would DEFINITELY advise you against buying it - you can hear how badly it screws up our recordings, making it sound like I have some kind of freaky precognition ability to step over Dr. Sexy's lines and respond before he even speaks. It could be a neat effect. Kind of like a really terrible premise for a sci-fi show, which I'm sure SyFy(iLuS) will pick it up and make a new series about. However, as someone incredibly desperate to just have ONE FUCKING SHOW without a technical glitch, I feel comfortable telling you the effect is shit. I might give it a break if anyone from their support staff would answer my message on their support forums, but they chose instead to ignore it, so they can go eat alllll the cocks. And their shitty software. In theory, Marvel's Super Squad could be a lot of fun. In practice, it sucks. Comic piracy is definitely a topic that needs to be discussed, and certainly by much more intelligent people. However I feel comfortable in stating that if digital comics were a buck, I would definitely have a lot more of them on my iPhone (and if you have one or an [even better] Android, you definitely need to get American Terror). If you don't have one of them and still want the digital experience, why not check out the Pimptastic Shawn (Stan Leeroy) Pryor's Mercury and the Murd? C'mon, it's ONE DOLLAR. What a deal! I'm fond of the new anatomy terms we invent this week. Expect to be tested next week. It's a shame the HappyJack wasn't here to chime in about going back to Sunday School. Oh, and about comic piracy. But mostly about Sunday School... Comments[0] |
Mon, 9 November 2009 Things we discuss this week include how horrible Steakums are, easy bachelor food, movie reviews featuring GI Joe, Transformers 2, Orphan and Season 2 of Dexter, dioramas, results of the practical jokes, voicemail from Jason Becker, and more talk about our 4th anniversary special. Comics we discuss this week include SECRET SIX #15, DOOM PATROL #4, CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN #4, HEROGASM #6, THE BOYS #36, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #30. You can probably tell we record the show before breakfast, as the talk is immediately side-tracked into the realm of food. And I think it’s an agreed-upon opinion that Steak-Ums are perhaps the biggest rip-off in the fat guy foods category. Totally misleading! Don’t fall for the hype, folks – if you want a good cheesesteak, get your own slicer and stead and make that shit from scratch! I’m glad to hear that Transformers 2 is even worse than I had imagined. I have a very strong imagination, you see. And to hear that it is SO bad that it actually made Dr. Sexy fast-forward through most of it? Hilarity. As we mention in the show, our 4th anniversary is coming up some day soon. Not sure when we’ll specifically celebrate it, but I think we’re going to try and do a big blast for it. We’re talking guest stars, guests hosts, and possibly even guest listeners. You know you want to come to the party. Erm. Do you want to come to the party? Comments[0] |

Mon, 26 October 2009 This week we kick HappyJack off of the show. But since it's our last show anyway, it's kind of an empty threat. And speaking of empty - Dr. Sexy's testes are NOT, as he has spawned! The lovely Sexretary is expecting, so the N3RD clan continues to grow! The stupid recording software is back to being buggy, so of COURSE there's that goofy overstepping bug yet again. We also discuss Dr. Sexy's inception into Google Wave (without Kwip), what you have to do to get an invite from him, gay scrubs, Stan Lee's Jane Pym was a whore, great costume ideas, robot friends, Kwip hates how Renn Faire treats it's actors, more Jumpgate talk, the crazy Serenity Big Damn Model, Left4Dead 2, L4DMST3K, and very sexy costumes. Comics we discuss this week include: MIGHTY AVENGERS #30, COWBOY NINJA VIKING #1, POE #4.
The best part about Halloween is the number of very attractive friends that we have who find the holiday a GREAT excuse to really whore it up. Seriously, there were some VERY hot chicas at the costume party last night, and that's almost as good as the delicious treats that were served. Out of the two, I'd probalby go with the treats as being my favorite part, since I'm allowed to partake of them... We put together probably my mostest favoritest costume for Kwipette yet this year. It's a shame if you're not her friend on facebook, because she posted the pics of her awesome costume (and some of the cuties at the party) on her facebook page.
If you're not a QMx Insider, perhaps you haven't heard about The Big Damn Replica. In which case, allow me to warn you: it is a tale of heartbreak, of love that can never be (even with a $500 discount), and of remote controlled lights. It would look SOOOO good in my display case, too...
If you're not cool enough to know about Google Wave, then just take our word for it that it is a pretty incredible thing and you desperately want to be part of it. In fact, you want to be a part of it SOOO badly, you'll send Dr. Sexy nekkid pics to secure yourself one of his invites.
If you're anywhere near Kwip for any amount of time, chances are he's cornered you to blather on about how great Jumpgate is. But if you were a Wing Commander, X-Wing or Freespace fan, you owe it to yourself to play Jumpgate. It's only $10 a month, and while the graphics are a bit dated, it really is a fantastic game. Dust off your joystick (and while you're at it, you can click on the "Watercooler" link at the top of the page to get to the JoystickRequired.com forums where all your Jumpgate questions will be answered!).
Sorry about that stupid overlapping bug. I don't know what the hell is up with the Pamela recording software, but at this point I feel comfortable saying it's a piece of shit and not to invest in it. Yes, it does have some nice features, but if the absolute most BASIC feature - recording two people conversing - fails, then what the hell is the point?
Big congrats to Dr. Sexy and the Sexretary on their succesful mating! Now to start planning on how we're going to corrupt the child...Comments[0] |
Mon, 19 October 2009 You know we love the American Terror book by Jeff McComsey, but you have GOT to check out the animated short based on it. There's so much awesomeness in it, I don't even know where to begin - but I'll start with how awesome it is to see this produced locally here in Lancaster, PA. Woot! The Family Guy Superfriends Intro Dr. Sexy talks about is hilarious. Because I like words, I was baffled by the concept of speaking in pictographs, but if you check out Araknid Kid you'll probably love it as much as Dr. Sexy does - and now that I've read it, I definitely love it, also! So that's a ringing endorsement, see? It's true that while Dr. Sexy and HappyJack have been slacking, I've been hard at work refining my zombie hunting skills. I've got three new maps I got from the excellent L4DMaps.com website that are now in regular rotation: Death Aboard Death Stop The Arena of the Dead If you're a zombie hunter (and you don't mind a Comments[3] |
Mon, 12 October 2009 I wish there were something else we discussed during this show, but honestly, the discussion rarely veered off-topic. Kaigon and I share a deep-seated guilt complex that just doesn’t let up: we are assholes. We have been evil, vile men our entire lifetimes, and there is no redemption for us. Your best bet is to stop associating with us right now. The pussoy is this little gem of an ad that Kaigon found: Seriously, can you see anything else in that image? Or are we the only pervs? Although the lag problem seems to have been fixed, I still vastly overpower Kaigon in the recording, so I had to rely upon Levelator once again. Apologies for how it distorts the sound oddly in some places. But not really, because – hello, asshole? Remember? Comments[1] |

Mon, 21 September 2009 If you're looking for banners of any sort, check out our friend Devyn's company, http://www.imphotographics.com. I can't say enough good things about him - the banners were fantastic, and he really went out of his way to correct a problem (including giving us a FREE banner!). Great guy, super customer support, GREAT PRICES! Tell 'em the N3RDS sent ya! Oh, and the awesome Steampunker we met was Zebulon Vitruvius Pike. PS - F'ing Zach, there are crickets in this episode, so you probably shouldn't listen or your vagina will hurt.... Comments[0] |
Mon, 14 September 2009 We hear the best review of Mumblepuss ever, congrats to our N3RDBrawl winner Eric, and a VERY brief recap of the Pittsburgh Comic Con on our drive back. The sound quality's a little rough and we don't go NEARLY into the detail that everyone loves in our recaps, but we promise that will come later. We had a fantastic time, and we have a LOT of great stories to tell you. But this will get your appettite wet with a brief overview of the con!Comments[2] |

Mon, 13 July 2009 ![]() If you've listened to our show or met us at any recent cons, you've heard us talk about our idea for the upcoming Pittsburgh Comic Con. The idea goes like this: at the N3RDCast booth, we'll be passing out wooden dollars. WITH those wooden dollars will be small flyers that list all the participating booths people can use those dollars at. People will then trundle off to spend their dollars (one per customer, valid only at participating vendors, of course!) at one booth or another. HOWEVER - they will visit ALL the booths on our list. Why? Because if they do so, they can get someone at that booth to sign the flyer. When they return that flyer to our booth with all of the required signatures, they will be entered to win a large, high-quality print signed by all the participating artists. The print is a large jam piece - it will be started as a digital file by Leadslinger Studios, featuring some of their characters fighting empty spaces. The piece will then be sent around (through the magics of the interweb) to all participating artists in turn so they can add their character(s) to the jam piece in one massive, giant rumble! The final crowning touch will be added by Jamie "Dr. Sexy" Fickes, as Mumblepuss will reign supreme over the fight. Because really, in a fight of super-powers, ALWAYS bet on the surly teddy bear... We will also provide all the participating artists with prints that they can do with as they see fit (I've heard they'll be acceptable currency for drinks at a bar later!). Space is limited (meaning we have no idea how many artists we can get to work on this piece in one month!), so if you're interested, let Kwip know! See you in Pitt! Mon, 22 June 2009 There were a number of interruptions during the interviews, but rather than try and edit them out, we left them in because they added to the fun of the situation! We have a HUUUUUGE list of books to talk about from this show. We actually (mostly) behaved (despite the best efforts of Digital Pimp to get us drunk!) and managed to spend most of our money on all new books that we can't wait to talk to you about, but wait we shall! Next week we'll discuss our new books. This week, 2 really fun interviews! Comments[0] |

Mon, 16 March 2009 HappyJack has left us high and dry as he tries to hide the bodies at his house and otherwise make it sellable. I’d like to see the DiY channel do a show on THAT. But loyal Croft comes through in a bind, driving a ridiculous amount of time just to be abused and taken adventage of - which is basically what we’re here for, so it all works out. My never-ending love song for Google adds a new verse this month: Google Voice should be coming by the end of this month. Built from the back of GrandCentral, it’s an impressive collection of services and one more step towards Google’s eventual world-dominance (and I can’t wait). I do find it disturbing that after so long of mocking PnP players Gabe has taken up the cause so fervantly. I guess it should be encouraging - an incredibly visual person has been brought over to the flock, converted to the greatness that is running a game based mostly on imagination, dice and math. But of course he can’t go quietly - he’s using the Dwarf Fortress sets. While I get their appeal to a miniatures game, I’m still an old-fashioned graph-paper n3rd. But those are some damn cool looking sets. The Apple Netbook rumors have taken hold once again. While I think it’s incredibly cool, I still want a Kindle2 more. No, it can’t do everything a Mac Netbook could do. But I have a laptop. I don’t need a netbook! How awesome is Sharis Van Sciver? I wonder if her cape gets caught in the car when she’s driving. Or maybe she just flies everywhere? Inquiring minds want to know. Seriously, though, if you haven’t read that story, go take a peek at a better person than I will ever be. Not that this is saying much… Do you really need someone to tell you that dressing up like the Joker and pointing a shotgun at the police is not going to end well? I think that story would have been better had he actually dressed up like the Cesar Romero Joker. That I could have at least respected. Brad Smoley, friend of Ziggy and Corey (I screwed up his name again - what is this mental block I have against the poor man?), has launched a site for his hilarious comic based on the suffering of Ziggy and Tinsdale at various cons. There’s also a cartoon, which we’ve mentioned in the past, but you should check out the site, great stuff. And of course, we have our weekly Left4Dead discussion. This week’s Comics N3RDCast is really more about the N3rd than it is the comics, since it was a very light week for everyone. We still manage a few titles to spoil: THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ #4, FABLES #82, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #11, RESIDENT EVIL #1. Show Notes (thanks Croft!): Our closing theme is the awesome “I’ll Still Be a Geek After Nobody Thinks It’s Chic (The Nerd Anthem)” from Marian Call’s new album, Got To Fly. If you haven’t picked up this album yet, you really should - it’s a fantastic listen, chock full of nods to Browncoats & BSG fans & numerous geekery references! Comments[4] |
Mon, 9 March 2009 Ahoy hoy, dedicated listeners! Kwip here - but I’m crazy swamped at work (to the point where I can’t even browse porn! Poor me!), so Croft has graciously stepped in to help us with the show notes - everyone say “Thank you, Croft!” At the end of this episode, you may think we really should change the name of the N3RDcast to the R4P3cast, or some variation of that. It starts with some vague talks of Watchmen, which most of us had seen opening day. This part is pretty much spoiler-free. Warning to listeners, a spoiler-filled conversation takes place after the outro music. Along with that come some talks of conventions and the things that stand in the way of going to them. Also, rumors about the Wizard World Philadelphia being canceled. Marian Call is a brilliant songstress, but with Mac’s help she’s also got an awesome music video. Then the show took a sudden turn for the worse with the mentioning of a rape video game in Japan called Rapelay. It’s all downhill from there with robots that have feelings yet don’t know when to stop, and another voice mail from a Jason Becker with a bad French Canadian accent. Not to worry, no other characters from the Multiverse Party Line made an appearance. The show gets back on track as we catch up with Happyjack after being gone for 2 weeks. Of course there’s more discussion about Left 4 Dead, which will never get old (that’s a lie, probably). Kwip and HappyJack give the plumbing tip of the week. Also, funny stories about listening to/working at college radio stations that turns into talks about why Dr. Sexy can’t get into metal, HappyJack hates Led Zeppelin, Rush and pretty much any other good classic rock bands, and who would win in a battle of Axel Rose versus Robert Plant. Titles spoiled this week include: SECRET SIX #7, SOLOMON GRUNDY #1, BATMAN: CACOPHONY #3, ULTIMATE WOLVERINE Vs. HULK #3, SHRAPNEL #3, DRESDEN FILES #3, NO HERO #4, DEADPOOL #8, THE GOON #32, SPIDER-MAN & THE HUMAN TORCH IN…BAHIA DE LOS MUERTOS! #1 (one-shot), THE BOYS #29, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #23, X-MEN/SPIDER-MAN #4, THE MIGHTY #2, TERROR TITANS #6, AGENTS OF ATLAS #2, and SECRET WARRIORS #2. The show breaks down like this: Our closing theme is the awesome “I’ll Still Be a Geek After Nobody Thinks It’s Chic (The Nerd Anthem)” from Marian Call’s new album, Got To Fly. Tue, 3 March 2009 Jason Becker is responsible for a lot of things, but he is certainly the foil in this episode. In fact, we start off the show discussing one of the more disturbing things he’s sent us recently (and that’s really saying something). And no, I won’t link to it. Gross. Everyone knows Ben Folds, and I highly recommend going to see him if he comes to your area. But in addition to his awesomeness, you should check out Miniature Tigers. They’re a great group of guys and I really love their music. This show features a number of samples from their latest album, so enjoy! With everything that’s been going on this year, Team N3RD won’t be rocking the MS Walk in ‘09. We’re taking a little break to get ourselves recovered. With the insanity of the end of ‘08 and the start of ‘09, there was just no way we could coordinate anything big this year. But don’t let that dismay you! If you have money burning a whole in your pocket, feel free to donate to the “Buy Dr. Sexy a Cintiq, Kwip a Kindle 2, and HappyJack more antipsychotics Walk!” I’m very interested to get my copy of The Comic Book Podcast Companion. In addition to the ten characters it spares us, Eric Houston (the author) interviewed the guys from Comic Geek Speak, Quiet! Panelologists At Work and the Comic Book Queers (among others!). So it focuses on the greats, but also has advice about hardware and software setups (from what I understand). Normally we are the victims of Jason Earl Becker’s telephone antics, but for some reason madness overtook us this show and we decided to turn the tables a bit. Thus is born the Multiverse Party Line! Normal people will probably want to skip from 24:15 to 37:15, but that segment had me laughing pretty hard during edits. Just be careful come 31:10 - Grant Morrison is SUCH a noisy bitch! We talk a little about the great Brian Keene, a great local horror writer. Brian’s a great guy, and, even better, he’s plotting to kill our very own Pulsar. Always good for a laugh! Titles we spoil this week include: BATMAN THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #2, JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #24, TEEN TITANS #68, WONDER WOMAN #29, AVENGERS INITIATIVE #22, CAPTAIN AMERICA #47, DR DOOM MASTERS OF EVIL #2, MIGHTY AVENGERS #22, NEW AVENGERS #50, THUNDERBOLTS #129. The show breaks down like this: Our closing theme is the awesome “I’ll Still Be a Geek After Nobody Thinks It’s Chic (The Nerd Anthem)” from Marian Call’s new album, Got To Fly. If you haven’t picked up this album yet, you really should - it’s a fantastic listen, chock full of nods to Browncoats & BSG fans & numerous geekery references! Comments[0] |
Mon, 23 February 2009 I think it’s safe to say that Left4Dead has taken over most of our lives, waking and dreaming. It really is a perfect game, and I highly recommend it to you. If you’re on Steam, give us a holler - we’ll have to set up some matches. I have also been playing the HELL out of DDO lately when I’m not rocking L4D. I actually have some stories to post about it, and one of these days I might get around to doing so. Along those lines, I snuck in some WoW time, too, so maybe I’ll get TWO stories up… As Gail pointed out, the creator of Planet Karen lost EVERYTHING in a fire recently (including an upstairs neighbor!), so if you can help, head over to http://planetkaren.girl-wonder.org/ and donate. Even $5 will help! I’m very excited about the news that Keith Giffen’s taking over Doom Patrol. That was a great team book and it will definitely be a great addition back into the DCU. Derek listens to WAAAAY too many comic book podcasts - and that’s coming from ME! But we were happy to be featured in one of his latest episodes. One of Kwipette’s friends is a chiropractor, and she recently agreed to undergo the trauma that is having to come into physical contact with me. I have now seen her exactly twice and my back feels - well, if not great, at least damn good and the best that someone sleeping on a futon couch every night could expect! I’m definitely an advocate for chiropractors - at least, reputable ones. Although I don’t really know how to tell the difference… So maybe I’ll just say I’m an advocate of HOT chiropractors? Dr. Bruce, the godfather of comic book podcasts, is never one to steer us wrong. But I think he greatly underestimated my loathing for manga in his recommendation of Pluto and 20th Century Boys for me. Maybe if they were in the $5-10 range I MIGHT have picked one or the other to read, but no way am I risking OVER $10 on potential loathing! We have to fire up Skype again one of these days and get back to talking to some creators. We’ve had some good ones in the past, and it’d be nice to get M. Sean McManus back to re-do his awesome interview that was tragically lost in the mists of my ineptness. Speaking of my ineptness, you’ll notice this show cuts off abruptly. That’s because I forgot to wipe the memory card, so we ran out of room. HA! Hilarity! And you thought our technical woes were over when we went to just using one piece of equipment! And no, sorry Evil Mormon Becker, you’ll just need to go ahead and get with raping our loved ones. The show breaks down like this:

Mon, 16 February 2009 I never watched Psych prior to last week, but I think this is a show I’m either going to start watching, or - preferably - pick up the DVDs. It’s very funny and clever (at least one episode is!), and makes fun of gullible people. HappyJack’s equally as impressed with United States of Tara, and while I like the premise, there’s just no way I’m upping my cable subscription to catch one show. Dollhouse premiered to a lot of mixed reviews - most of them negative from what I’ve heard. HappyJack wasn’t overly impressed with it, but he is going to keep watching it, so we’ll see what he thinks. If you’re in the area, make sure you join us at the Lehigh Valley Comic Con. It’s a TINY con, but a very cool one - great deals to be had, a lot of good folks AND HOT DOGS! But if you don’t make it to that, you have GOT to come down for the CGS’ Super Show, which is now pushed back to March of 2010. I won Jon’s bum from The Hat Decides, but being that we are generous souls and want to spread the love around, we’re giving ownership of Jon’s bum to The Comic Book Queers! They would certainly treat it much better than us, so Jon should be deeply relieved. Eli is getting married soon, but I refuse to believe it. He’s one of the last bachelors, and he had much better prospects than most of us combined. I REFUSE to believe he’s going to leave all that opportunity behind to tie himself down to ONE vagina FOREVER! Or a couple years, something like that… If you didn’t get a Valentine’s greeting, why not take a moment to print your own? We love Chris Eliopolus‘ work on any number of projects, but we’re all excited about the idea of Pet Avengers. We all read webcomics, but finding the gems in the trash is sometimes a real challenge. Joe Loves Crappy movies did a very good one for Taken. Any time you get to call kids “dicks” is ok in my book! The mug we’re talking about is this fine Mumblepuss mug (the large, frosted one) which I purchased from the Mumblepuss Zazzle store. If you won’t more rudeness, then check out Leadslinger’s store for your own gaelic cursing tshirt! Show Breakdown:3:40 - Reviewing the Mumblepuss Zazzle gear 5:15 - Tax talk 9:10 - PvP Online is grayscale now 11:00 - Printing talk 14:55 - No super show this year 20:15 - Wii! 24:11 - Left4Dead 29:15 - Psych 30:45 - United States of Tara 32:35 - Dollhouse 35:30 - What to do with Jon’s bum 38:15 - Horror Movies 39:00 - Strippergeddon 39:45 - Deadwood Valentines 40:30 - Hannah Montana, Asian Hater 44:30 - Facebook is for embarrassing friends 46:30 - Pet Avengers 48:00 - Comic guys can start some shit 51:00 - lots of shit in the webcomics stream! 59:30 - Printing shirts 1:03:25 - Voice mails 1:08:22 - Comic talk 1:16:15 - Valentine’s plans 1:17:30 - Sirius going bankrupt 1:22:30 - VHS to DVD failures 1:24:00 - Dental work

Mon, 9 February 2009 The show picks up after we’ve listened to a few voicemails from Jason Becker. Our opening comments don’t convey exactly what Becker says: he doesn’t hate crossovers in general, but the greed-fueled ridiculous crossovers that have become so prevalent nowadays. He left us about 10 minutes of voicemails to that effect, and while we agree whole-heartedly, we didn’t have time to play them all. We had important things (like broken pickle jars in uncomfortable places) to talk about. I’m sure he’ll follow up in the comments with how we’ve misquoted him, so he’ll clarify it for you. If you haven’t seen the trailer for Batman: Arkham Asylum, make sure you check it out. Although we don’t like the voice talent they use, it looks really damn cool. We’ve been consistently disappointed in how Reed Exhibitions has run NYCC, but we’re probably in the minority. And now they’re going to start up a Chicago Con, which will probably really screw over the Wizard World Chicago Con - but since that’s no longer being referred to as a “Wizard World” con, perhaps they’ll be filling a void if Wizard pulls out completely. If you listened to us back in the Chaos Radio days, you’ll know who Heide is. Well, she’s finally gotten around to her own show, so make sure you give it a listen. Unfortunately we finally catch up this week with the rest of the interwebs and have our own viewing of Glass Ass dot com. Yeah, I’m not linking to that. That thing is not fit for ANYONE. Seriously, it makes 2G1C look like a cute pug video or something. It’s truly, truly horrific, and you’re a better person for never having viewed it! HappyJack’s children are coming to the age where they’re starting to be interested in boys. The hilarity is really going to start when they bring their first boyfriend home to meet daddy. Oh, the emotional (and possible physical!) scarring that shall ensue! One of the coolest bits of news to come to our attention lately is that IDW is going to be publishing The Bloom County Library - complete with Berkeley Breathed’s blessing! It sounds like there’s going to be a lot of amazing features with it, also, so it’s very exciting. On a more somber note, the Sexretary lost her father this week. Our thoughts go out to her & her family. Titles we spoil this episode include: SECRET SIX #6, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #585, ASTONISHING TALES #1, DEADPOOL #7, FRANKLIN RICHARDS DARK REIGNING CATS & DOGS, SECRET WARRIORS #1, DEAD IRONS #1, PUNISHER WAR ZONE #6, GOLEM ONE SHOT, I AM LEGION #1, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #10, SHRAPNEL #1, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #22, NEW AVENGERS #49, DAREDEVIL #115, MIGHTY #1, JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #23, and THE BOYS #27. The show breaks down like this:

Mon, 2 February 2009 Dr. Sexy and I (and our giant posse) took the mountains this weekend! We were camping at some cabins in French Creek state park, and we took time out from our vicious Munchkin matches and mountains of junk food to record a show. This show is a bit of a departure from our usual ‘casts because A) we don’t normally have so many people there, and B) we don’t spend much time talking about comics. Erm… Ok, so this IS like a normal show… We played a TON of Munchkin this weekend. We had almost all of the expansions, so it really made for a fun time. Definitely a recommended activity for cabin living! At about the 56-minute mark, we start discussing some spooky stories from our youth. We had the lights turned off and a single candle lit, so if you can, I recommend that as the listening atmosphere. Listening to the show now in my cubicle under fluorescent lights isn’t quite the same experience… We only spoil a few comics this week: SCOURGE OF GODS #1, WANTED, and FINAL CRISIS. And the Wanted movie, too. The show breaks down like this:

Fri, 23 January 2009 It’s been a long time coming, but the pro-zombie forces couldn’t keep us down! In this last installment of our segment on preparing for the coming zombie invasion, Redwalker and Kwip discuss hitting the road and making the transition from your home to your haven. Now that our “warm-up” segment is done, we’ll get started analyzing
such training videos as the Living Dead series and even such
questionable topics as Feel free to chime in with your own thoughts - you can drop us an email or call our voicemail at 646-797-2763! Comments[0] |
Mon, 19 January 2009 If you’ve listened to Q!PaW, then you know how funny Jon and Matt are. Well, they’ve brought a third friend into the mix, and have expanded their coverage from comic books to whatever topic they pull out of the hat in their new podcast, The Hat Decides. Very funny stuff. HappyJack likes spicier food than I do, and that’s saying something. But he’s also prone to eating really disgusting things (like salads), so to hear him talk about something that grosses him out can definitely put one off of lunch, to say the least. But eating odd foods might be in his genetic make-up, because apparently his daughter has caught on to eating oddities… We met Cory (whose name I always forget because I’m an asshole) and Ziggy (who is kind enough to have a very memorable name) of Fake McCoy Comics several times as we commiserated over our lousy table locations. Granted, they usually wound up in worse spots than us, so we laughed at them, too (always good to find someone even slightly worse off than you, of course). While they struggled with their regular titles, I think they’ve got an unbelievably awesome hit on their hands with the Animated CornerKicked series. Hilarious. I think everyone agrees that Fox are complete assholes per the ridiculous “we deserve free money” bullshit. However, I don’t think anyone has put the situation nearly as eloquently as Cracked.com’s Daniel O’Brien. If you’re the sort of n3rd that enjoys beta versions of software, let us know your thoughts on Windows 7. I’ve heard quite a mix of things about it, but I’m always eager to hear more (good OR bad!). HappyJack is going to be accompanying Dr. Bruce and Steve to SPACE this year, and I can’t wait to hear about it. It sounds like a good, very affordable show (which is quite a welcome change!). Nothing says high class more than drinking your beer out of an ice-frosted glass stein. With an evil teddy bear’s face on it. Mmmm, classy! I can’t wait to get my mitts on it! Our new closing theme is the awesome “I’ll Still Be a Geek After Nobody Thinks It’s Chic (The Nerd Anthem)” from Marian Call’s new album, Got To Fly. If you haven’t picked up this album yet, you really should - it’s a fantastic listen, chock full of nods to Browncoats & BSG fans & numerous geekery references!Show breakdown goes like this: 1/17/09 Comments[0] |
Mon, 12 January 2009 This weeks show represents (another) attempt at a new sound for us. Under the guidance of Dr. Bruce, I picked up the Zoom H2 Handy Portable Stereo Recorder and we recorded this show using it. While I obviously still have some kinks to work out (getting everyone level), I’m VERY happy with the quality and ease of it. If you’re in the market for an awesome hand-held digital recorder, the Zoom comes with the official N3RD stamp of approval. I don’t know how you get involved with e-Rewards, but if you can spare 15-20 minutes online occasionally, it’s well worth it. I’ve racked up $50 of GameStop gift certificates - not to mention a few free subscriptions to various magazines over the past year or so. Tom Spurgeon over at CBR did a nice interview with Matt Fraction that was a good read. It was certainly enough to send us spiraling off into a lengthy discussion on comics and the industry as a whole. We were pretty much resigned to not going to NYCC, no matter what fancy screenings they were offering. But now we’ve heard that a number of our favorite people are going to be there, it’s just rubbing salt in the wound. The awards season has begun, and Dark Knight has already come out strong. But speaking of awesome movies, there’s news about Iron Man 2 casting decisions that could make for some interesting characters. Wizard World seems to be in quite a lot of trouble. This isn’t really news to anybody, but it’s still annoying to think about when you look at some of the horrible decisions they’ve made and how ridiculously expensive their tables are. Title we spoil this week include: DETECTIVE COMICS #852, FACES OF EVIL GRUNDY #1, SECRET SIX #5, SGT ROCK THE LOST BATTALION #3, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #582, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #9, MARVEL ZOMBIES 3 #4, PUNISHER #1, SPIDER-MAN FEAR ITSELF #1, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #21, X-MEN NOIR #2, BOYS #26, NO HERO #3. Again, the only breakdown I think folks might care about is where we start talking about comics. That’s at 52:15 if you want to miss out on all our brilliant observations and wit.Comments[0] |
Mon, 5 January 2009 I’ve often discussed on the show how surprised I am that there aren’t crazies out there trying to be the next Batman. Well, I need ponder no more! Although the NY Times has a brief article about these “real” heroes, Rolling Stones has a very in-depth and pretty interesting read about one hero in particular. It’s disturbing, amusing and just a bizarre read to see how some people delude themselves. And that’s coming from a guy who believes he can lose weight whilst eating Ben & Jerrys. Pittsburgh Comic Con has been delayed until September of 2009 (and one of these days they might even get around to updating their site). I think there’s a lot of split opinions on the whole move - some of the folks were upset that they didn’t find out before now, some folks are upset at the new date, and some folks are just upset at change, period. This will be hard for HappyJack, since Leadslinger Studios was going to premiere a number of their new titles in Pittsburgh, Dr. Sexy has finally designed and ordered the official Dr. Sexy Muppet. I’m of course very jealous because I can barely afford to make a Kwip sock puppet, but I’m sure Dr. Sexy will get many miles of usage out of that Muppet! Congrats to Dr. Bruce finally hit his 100th KomicsKast recently. We were hoping for a downward spiral of drunken debauchery, but I guess we’re the only ones that get up to that sort of chaos during our shows. Paul Adams joins us on this show. Among his other distinctions, he is also the new drummer for Sobriety Starts Tomorrow, a Panama City punk band. If you’re into the punk scene, you should check these guys out - tell them the N3RDs sent ya! Titles we spoil this week (and we really do have some spoilers in there, watch out!): SECRET SIX, WHAT IF SECRET WAR, JSA #22, AVENGERS INITIATIVE #20, WOLVERING #70, CAPTAIN AMERICA #45, KICK ASS #5, GOON #31, BATMAN CACOPHANY #2, BATMAN #684, PUNISHER WAR ZONE #4, VENOM: DARK ORIGINS #5, DAREDEVIL #114, TEEN TITANS #66, ATOMIC ROBOT #5. To listen to the show, RIGHT-CLICK HERE AND CHOOSE “SAVE AS…” I didn’t bother with the music interludes on this show. I’m still not sure how I feel about them - I like using music to break up the show, but it’s kind of hard to break our show up since we bounce around topics so much. I’d ask HappyJack and Dr. Sexy what they think, but they never listen to the shows, so why bother? Regardless, this show I only use a clip from Paul’s band at the end of the show, so enjoy! Also, there’s not much point in doing notes for this show, since we don’t talk about much else other than the comics, but if you want to skip over our blathering and get right to the comics talk, that starts around 18:30. Mon, 29 December 2008 We start the show with a very, very lovely voice mail from Gail Simone (the REAL Gail, not Becker in a bad falsetto). Apart from being incredibly talented, Gail is also a real sweetheart and one of the most thoughtful folks in the biz. Speaking of sweet creators, apart from being a great writer, Kelly Sue is also an incredible chef. Or at least, presenter - having never actually tasted any of her food, I can only comment on the appearance of deliciousness of her bûche de noël with meringue mushrooms (and Godzilla). We feasted on quite the cookie banquet courtesy of Mrs. HappyJack during this show, so brace yourself for much smacking of lips. We discuss some of our delightful Christmas presents. Am I the only person that got cash for Xmas and immediately turned around to spend that cash on buying presents for other people? Yeah, I’m not a smart man. Dr. Bruce is closing in on episode 100 (it might already be done so far as I know as of this writing!). The Pittsburgh Comic Con is one of our favorite cons, so we’re going a little crazy trying to figure out what’s going on with it since we’ve heard conflicting reports of it being postponed. I bitch about it because I hate going to concerts, but Jared Reynolds is one hell of a nice guy. He’s the bassist for Ben Folds, and we’ve talked to him (and Sam Smith, the drummer) on a couple occasions at great length - usually about the joys of the Wii. He’s amazingly down-to-earth and just a very cool, very sincere guy. So if you’re at a Ben Folds concert, tell him I said hi… My friend sent me the most disturbing text message that had me all aflutter. Don’t you hate it when that happens? Anyone have any particularly disturbing messages they wish to share with the class? Titles we spoil this week: GREATEST AMERICAN HERO #1, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #581, ULTIMATUM #2, THOR GOD SIZED #1, THUNDERBOLTS #127, DEADPOOL #5, SPIDER-MAN NOIR #1, BILLY BATSON AND THE MAGIC OF SHAZAM #3, WIZARD OF OZ, THOR #12, INVINCIBLE #57, ASTOUNDING WOLF-MAN #11, SECRET INVASION REQUIEM #1, MIGHTY AVENGERS #20, NEW AVENGERS #48, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #8, JIM BUTCHERS DRESDEN FILES STORM FRONT, X-FACTOR #38 You’ll have to forgive this recording - apparently while we were recording, HappyJack’s daughters were playing “Stomp Stomp Revolution.” Oh, and go read Mumblepuss already. Mon, 22 December 2008 If you have a Mac and don’t have Delicious Library, I honestly don’t know what you use that thing for. A paperweight? Maybe you’re just someone that doesn’t LIKE to easily build an inventory of all their books, games, music and movies. Weirdo. We’ve talked about it before, but it’s always such a hassle when you’re trying to figure out how to insure your comics - and then to get rid of comics you don’t want any more in a reasonable manner. Because throwing away comic books - even Image - is tantamount to eating babies. Dr. Sexy’s birthday bash was quite the enjoyable night. It was made even more so by Effing Zac’s not-so-subtle attempts to let us know that he is gay and desperately wants to come out to us. We would accept him - even welcome having another gay N3RD at hand to provide us with fashion advice. Unfortunately, Effing Zac chooses to live in the state of Denial. Poor Effing Zac. He’ll never know true love at this pace! Our part of the world is referred to by some as “PA Dutchy” - that’s Pennsylvanian Dutch country in long-hand. While it is an area that is prone to exotic foods such as deep-fried oreoes, it also gives us such wonderful delights as chicken and waffles. YUM! Spewgilist is the wicked, evil man who got us hooked on potato vodka. Our livers have sent him thank-you cards. Do you Woot? You really should. Dr. Sexy and I have gotten some spiffy toys on the cheap from them lately. Their Twitter feed makes it really handy to see the daily specials, too. Is anyone at ALL interested in seeing So Batman finally ended. Lamely, according to Dr. Sexy. And from what he says, it sounds like a pretty miserable telling all around. We’ve all come to accept that comic prices are going to rise - and that’s likely not to end any particular time, so don’t get comfy at $3.99, either. I’ve been waiting to see someone pull Molecule Man out of storage. I thought for sure he was going to be the big gun ending for Civil War, and when that didn’t pan out, I expected him to show up for Secret Invasion. However, it seems he’s still busy picking his nose somewhere… Punisher: War Zone got a good review from Dr. Sexy and some of our friends - provided you’re not interested in good dialogue, plot or acting. Things do blow up, though. I tend to strongly hate any sort of reality TV, so I’m loathe to even consider Estate of Panic in that genre, but it really is a fun show. The room obstacles are very entertaining, and I enjoy seeing the creative ways they’re set up every new episode. Speaking of TV, Dexter came to a wrap, and HappyJack insists this is a show we all need to watch. Anyone want to buy it for me on DVD? It IS the season of giving, you know… And there’s a couple other shows we discussed - the United States of Tara, BBC’s version of Neverwhere and Dr. Who. While we usually stick to sci-fi and/or fantasy books, Artie Lange’s book has us all interested. Mostly out of pity for that soon-to-be-dead bastard. If you’re the sort that does the facebooking, stop by our group and join in the… whatever it is we do there? Did you know there’s another nerdcast? Only they spell it correctly. Three episodes in, and they’re doubtless WAY more famous than us. Titles we spoil this week: X-MEN AND SPIDER-MAN, SECRET INVASION 8, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #581, SPIDER-MAN NOIR #1, AVENGERS INITIATIVE #19, WIZARD OF OZ #1, X-MEN NOIR #1, HOW TO BE A SERIAL KILLER, BODY BAGS, THE TITANS, PUNISHER WAR ZONE #1. 10:00 - Dr. Sexy’s birthday party and the revelations that came from it. Comments[0] |

This week we kick HappyJack off of the show.
It's a shame if you're not her friend on facebook, because she posted the pics of her awesome costume (and some of the cuties at the party) on
We hear the best review of Mumblepuss ever, congrats to our N3RDBrawl winner Eric, and a VERY brief recap of the Pittsburgh Comic Con on our drive back. The sound quality's a little rough and we don't go NEARLY into the detail that everyone loves in our recaps, but we promise that will come later. We had a fantastic time, and we have a LOT of great stories to tell you. But this will get your appettite wet with a brief overview of the con!
