The N3RDCast
Our weekly discussion on Comic Books (FULL of spoilers!), MMORPGs, gaming, comics, and geekdom in general.

You’re not going to believe this: We had technical difficulties! Honestly, some days I just don’t know why I get out of bed. I just don’t know where the problem lies: is it Stickam? Me? Comcast? Some combination therein? Whatever it is, we had to restart the show once we got

Once again I’m sure most of you are here to listen to the lovely Kelly Sue Deconnick, so I’ll go ahead and tell you that starts at the 59:00 mark. Kelly Sue, beside having one of the most frighteningly-titled blogs out there, is a very wonderful sport and all-around interesting person. She’s done a lot of interesting things in her life and seems to be one of those people that knows a little bit about everything.

I’m all for practical jokes. But I’m a bit of a wuss and don’t think that my mother being raped in the room next door while I’m tied to a stove is a good idea. I used to think that the idiots from Jackass took things too far, but Infarto’s an entirely new level. But as horrific as that is, I’d still rather watch that than Ex-Factor.

Yeah, I have no idea who Erik Larson is, I suck. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t get a kick out of reading his thoughts on One More Day.

I don’t see how Apple thinks their video rentals are going to do any better than the original Divx player. And I’m not the only skeptic.

It’s a safe bet that we’re already gay for Johnny Depp, but his generosity and general frood-ness is pretty damn impressive.

Jumping on couches is NOTHING. You’d better watch this before the crazies torch the building housing the servers to stop the truth from being spread!

I don’t know who designed this or who would buy it, but you can damn well bet it’s not a comic book fan.

Go here. Jump to 24 seconds in. Laugh. It’s okay, laugh.

Jim Jeffries needs to stop playing “I wonder what fits up HERE?

This article about comic books in libraries is pretty fascinating. I wasn’t aware of the business aspect of comics in libraries, but it certainly makes sense. I’d like to see more libraries build up collections like our local library - I certainly think it’d be a smart investment for the big comic companies to get their products out there to drum up interest from new readers, but I also think it’d be great to see more indy books in libraries. Mostly so I could read them first before investing in them!

George Romero’s early work stands as a monument to awesomeness. Granted, Land of the Dead was lame, but everyone’s allowed a do-over, right? Here’s hoping that this gets him back on track.

Becker can piss and moan all he wants about us being assholes for telling the truth about what we thought about the Hamtramck Idea Men’s offerings, but they asked us. I respect the hell out of those guys for A) actually finishing a project (make that MULTIPLE projects) and then B) offering it up for review. You can damn well bet that when (if) I ever finish a script, that bitch is getting locked away so I can say it was the greatest book ever and no one will know any different! But look man, if you ask our opinions, you’re going to get them. I think it’s a much worse disservice to suck someone off when I have serious reservations about their work. I love indie creators and want to support them, but as a creator you’ve got to be able to take criticism. If it helps you, fantastic! If it’s merely bullshit offered up by some fat blathering idiot that has never published a comic (ie, me) then ignore it and be on your merry way. But you can’t put something out there and only want to hear praises. I’d also like to think that we tried to be as constructive as possible in our critiquing (especially considering our normal criticism).

I don’t know if you’ll find it helpful, but if you don’t want to listen to THIS ENTIRE EPISODE THAT YOU CAN RIGHT-CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD TO YOUR COMPUTER, you can skim through it according to these notes:

Titles we spoil this week are: GOON #20, BATMAN STRIKES #41, SALVATION RUN #3, SPIRIT #12, INFINITE HORIZON #2, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #546, HULK #1, MIGHTY AVENGERS #7, PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #15, TWELVE #1, X-FACTOR #27, BOYS #14, KILLING PICKMAN #2. That seems like an awfully short list, but that’s all I can remember.

Yeah, so, I don’t think it’s much of a surprise to anyone that knows me that I’m neurotic and have issues. I don’t think I do a very good job explaining myself there. It’s not that I have a problem with attractive women. I simply have a problem with ME being NEAR attractive women. Well - the ones I’m not married to, that is…

I’m not sure why Sexy wants to rekindle the fight between Steve Niles and Matt Busch. That Matt guy seems like a pretty big douche - which we’re basing on his “Rock Star of Illustration title - so we’re mostly in Steve’s corner (with the exception of HappyJack, who hates everyone). That whole thing just seemed like such a kiddie drama, I’m not sure why it didn’t just break into a slapfight and be done with it. Trust me, I know allll about slapfights.

We love Keith Giffen. When we heard he was going on to do his column at Comic Book Resources, we were all excited, because the guy’s funny as hell and just an interesting person. But I don’t think he’s wrong about marriages being bad and about comics being for kids. I’m really looking forward to having our local comics dealer come on the show to discuss the demographics of comic buyers.

I didn’t even know about the PEDO-Phile joke, but it was interesting to read. I love hearing about those jokes that are hidden (and not really hidden!) in the comics that manage to make it through the editorial process.

HappyJack hooked Dr. Sexy up with The Flash’s Rogue War and it’s fantastic. So it’s interesting to read the Geoff Johns interview here that talks about the new Rogue’s series. And as long as I’m linking to Geoff Johns articles, this is another good one worth reading, too.

It’s true, we have a new member of the N3RD crew: The Sexretary. If you’re unfortunate enough to guest on our show, you can take some comfort in the fact that you’ll get to chat with the lovely Sexretary.

Our local library has always been a hot spot for me because they’ve got a decent sci-fi selection and a pretty good reference section. I’m a huge fan of the library system, and our library in particular has always seemed like a great one. But now they’ve gone up a few steps with a pretty impressive comic collection. Not just the ones you’d expect like The Sandman - they’ve got a bunch of great titles there that include stuff like Constantine, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and any number of DC and Marvel trades.

Being the new owner of a slim PSP that I am, I was pretty excited about Skype coming to the PSP. I just hope it works better on the PSP then it’s been working in the studio.

I don’t even know where we could possibly fit it, but I’d still love to have that 150″ plasma display. I’m thinking we’ll just replace one of the walls in our house with it.

I’ve been watching the Blu-Ray versus HD fight since before they were launched, but it finally looks like there’s some motion towards a winner. I don’t know if that’s going to pan out, but I hope so, I want to get me a PS3 and an HD TV and rock some… erm… Well, I don’t know, but I’m sure SOME movie’s coming out soon that’ll look great!

I think we’ve talked about this song before, but if you haven’t heard it, it’s definitely worth a listen.

With as pissed as we are about OMD, we all had a good laugh at this story about violence breaking out at a comic signing. It figures that Dan Slott is - as should be - to blame.

I can’t explain how important Neuromancer was to me as a young teenager. It was my first introduction to the whole Cyberpunk genre, and really sank it’s hooks into me. I still reguarly read that book at least once a year, and love it just as much. Other Gibson books are also great, but none of them were as significant to me as Neuromancer. So you can only imagine my DELIGHT to see the brain-damaged Darth ShittyActor taking the lead in the movie adaptation.

Dr. Sexy really liked the Snuggler video, but I’m much more partial to Between Two Ferns.

After being around the internet for years, you get accustomed to seeing board moderators go insane. But as old hat as it is, it can still be pretty amusing when someone gets up on their soapbox to tell everyone else not to get on theirs.

One of these days I’m going to remember to record the beginning of the damn show. I MUST next time, because Sexy came up with a new intro bit that’s pretty amusing. Too bad for you that you weren’t there to hear it! You’ll just have to settle for the show from the point I started recording.

We somehow managed to land Dan Slott! He calls in for over an hour of talking about Brand New Day, his career as a writer, funny stories about office antics, and dashing our dreams of he and Gail Simone marrying. It’s a testimony to his kindness that he puts up with us and our antics for over an hour.

Titles we spoil this week: THUNDERBOLTS #118, HOWARD THE DUCK #4, ULTIMATE HUMAN #1, MAGICIAN APPRENTICE #12, THE END LEAGUE #1, GRAVEL #0, EXILES #1, JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #41, TEEN TITANS YEAR ONE #1, MOON KNIGHT #14, DETECTIVE COMICS #840, BUFFY #10, ATOMIC MIKE #1.

I don’t care what Dr. Sexy says - this video may not be the coolest thing in the world, but the girls have hot bodies and that alone makes it worth watching. And he’s also a jerk face for not giving this video it’s proper dues as one of the greatest videos to appear on YouTube (yeah, I’ve linked to that one before, shaddup).

Honestly, I can’t believe Sexy’s kept up with Countdown this long. Interviews like this make it sound like such a brutal read - if you’re extremely well-versed in the DC ‘verse, I guess you’re getting a lot more out of it, but the whole thing just seems painful.

This is NOT part five of five, it’s something completely unrelated to One More Day and more about Joe Q and his magical guitar collection and restaurant endeavors.

DJ Coffman needs higher standards. We loved his book and were thrilled to meet him, so the honor was all ours. But if he thinks we’re cool NOW, just wait till the KN3EFest when we make him throw up his kidneys!

I don’t know why Heide’s so insecure - she’s our favoritest Cringe Humor personality, but that’s just because she’s read more comics than Kieran... But we’re all madly in love with her, and it’s pretty obvious why: her lovely, lovely command of the history of the Blitzkrieg.

Sure, it’s gimmicky, but I really like the idea of ranking the possible Skrull agents as playing cards. It’s a neat trick, and kudos to Dave Richards at CBR for coming up with it!

As excited as I am about Iron Man, the idea of an Avengers movie - especially if it’s done with the same quality Iron Man promises - is pretty exciting.

I hope these notes aren’t true, because I liked the job Bryan Singer did. It wasn’t the greatest Supes story that could’ve been told, and I’m not crazy about the actor they have playing Supes, but overall I enjoyed the movie.

Look asshole: if you’ve got TENS of THOUSANDS of dollars to blow on Star Trek props, life’s already been far too kind to you. If the worst thing that happens to you is you get ripped off in an auction, you deserve your money back - maybe. But possibly a kick to the balls, too. But if you turn around and sue for MILLIONS? You deserve to… I don’t know, something that Becker would come up with to punish you.

Look, it’s obvious that the important thing in this show is the Dan Slott call (which starts at about 47:11). But I’d suggest you stick around till the end, because the phone calls from Rob Leifeld and Peter David are really worth listening.

The best part of this show is that I completely forgot to start recording. I COULD have gone back and inserted the intro music, but everyone’s going to skip ahead to Dan Slott, so who cares? You can RIGHT CLICK HERE AND SAVE THE FILE!

And yeah, Kaigon, I DO say “Good Times a lot in this show, despite trying hard NOT to. You sonofabitch!
