The N3RDCast from 22 September, 2007: More Guest Stars!

So the big news this week was that we had Ted “Pulsar� Stoltz, our skilled sound engineer, along to abuse. And still somehow I managed to screw up every single piece of equipment in the studio…

No, that’s actually not news, it’s olds. NEWS is that Gail Simone called in this week! Last week, she was confused a bit - when I told her Noon EST (Eastern Standard Time), she was thinking GST (Gail Simone Time, which is the time zone you’re in when you don’t want to talk to a bunch of N3RDs who are going to make a bunch of stupid comments). This week we got it straightened out, though, and Gail endured our shitty connection (and even shittier conversation) to enlighten us with her thoughts on Jeff Smith’s Marvels, Wonder Woman versus apes and Nazis, and Bigfoot hunting.

We discussed our books, but I’m far too lazy to type them all out again (beside, I’d have to listen to the show again to get them all, and who’s got time for THAT?). I think (and thank Gord I posted to our fancy new forums with this) they were: UMBRELLA ACADEMY #1, CAPTAIN AMERICA #30, IRREDEEMABLE ANT-MAN #12, MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS #1, NEW X-MEN #42, PENANCE RELENTLESS #1, TERROR INC #2, WORLD WAR HULK #4. Probably missed someone, but meh, what can you do.

We then talked about keeping in touch with MOG friends, and what better way to do that than GuildCafe.com? We spoke with Sanya Weathers from that same site, and I gave her my MILLION-DOLLAR idea. For FREE! I’m nice like that (but I better get that Champion Level, dammit!).

Finally, we wrapped up the show with some info about ourselves for the lucky souls that haven’t listened to the show before. We broke down our five movies that most defined us (although I think Ted got away with only 3?), and had a bit of a round-table discussion about them. I have to admit, that was a pretty damn fun segment to do - partly because I didn’t have to worry about f’ing up the Skype connection, but mostly because even knowing HappyJack and Sexy as well as I do, I was still surprised by some of their choices. I botched mine, though - I totally should’ve swapped Aliens out for Empire, ya know?

We cut the show short right at 3 so Sexy, Kwipette and I could speed up to Reading to attend 300, and that was a damn fine time. We’ll be talking about it NEXT week, so make sure you tune in!

I’m trying something new this show - instead of breaking the show into 3 smaller segments, I left it as one gianormous one, because this is 2007, get high-speed already, you cavemen. Plus, out of our five listeners, I think the only ones that were still on dial-up were Kaigon and my mom. Well, Kaigon’s moved and up to speed, and my mom shouldn’t be listening to this rubbish anyway, so there you go.

Comics N3RDCast 10 September 2007: Baltimore Comic Con, Drunk!

A HORRIBLE recording as we try and put together a segment while driving back from the Baltimore Comic Con featuring show highlights. Because nobody asked for it: a special clip featuring Dr. Sexy and Kwip, completely drunk and being even bigger idiots than normal. Seriously. It’s BAD.

I’m not talking about the sound quality, although that alone is enough to make your eardrums drive themselves straight through your brain. No, I’m talking about the kind of drunken slurring and slurping that only the TRULY sloppy drunks can achieve.

Listening to this, I’m amazed that more people don’t want to hang out with us when we’re drunk. I mean - hello? Are we not the epitome of culture and sophistication?

Man. I think I actually licked the mic at one point while recording that. Isn’t THAT a pleasant image…

Comics N3RDCast 03 September, 2007: No, Seriously, We Have News!

A short list of spoilers this week: 52 AFTERMATH THE FOUR HORSEMEN #1, ACTION COMICS #855, BATMAN ANNUAL #26 HEAD OF THE DEMON, COUNTDOWN 35, TEEN TITANS #50, TEEN TITANS GO #46, BRIT #1, WALKING DEAD #41, AVENGERS INITIATIVE #5, SILVER SURFER REQUIEM #4, SPIDER-MAN ONE MORE DAY SKETCHBOOK, ENIGMA CIPHER #2, WARHAMMER 40K DAMNATION CRUSADE, WARHAMMER FORGE OF WAR. We also discuss the CBQ promo featuring our gayest moments, Cap vs. the terrorists, the Joust movie/graphic novel, Vladimir Kulich as Thor, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson hopefully NOT in JLU, the Panelologists are the most brilliant, wise comic chaps in the world and Dan Slott and Gail Simone should heed them immediately, we take on Killing Pickman critics, more radio discussion, and the AFKers.

I can’t believe the Queers are leaving us hanging. To make matters worse, they’re playing some of OUR gayest moments as a teaser for THEIR show! I think we should make a “straightest CBQ moments� clip segment in revenge…

Before we got started recording the show, I sat down and watched the Mist trailer. Did you see it yet? I’m due for heartbreak, I know, but it looks completely bad-ass. It seems - again, judging SOLELY from this brief preview - that they’re being extremely faithful to the original short story, which I absolutely loved. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

I never read the original Rambo story, relying instead upon the Sly version (which, I’ll readily admit, I loved muchly - just the first one, don’t kill me). So I don’t know where David Morrell is coming from when he wants to send Captain America to Afghanistan. As I said on the show, I guess we can’t win the real war, might as well win the fictitious one.

I’m with JK Parkin about this Joust movie/graphic novel treatment. It CAN’T be for real. Can it? I’ll be the first to call Joe Q a self-serving whore who would do anything for a buck, but I can’t even imagine HIM approving such a thing. And if HE wouldn’t do this, then who would touch such an incredibly shitty property? Oh. Right.

How the hell did HappyJack never see 13th Warrior? Unbelievable. But that’s why he can’t understand how incredibly perfect Vladimir Kulich would be for the role of Thor. You need a huge guy, someone with a rock chin and massive shoulders for this role. I don’t care that Vlad’s 51, he’s still perfect. I’m tired of superheroes looking so young; Thor can be an adult.

Yes, it’s true: I hate Ben Stiller and think he’s terribly over-rated. I’ve hated just about every single role he’s ever done. But it’s possible that’s my own jealousy from him being friends with Janeane Garofalo (she should be MY friend! Also, LOVER!). But as a voice actor, I wouldn’t hate him as Batman. Live actor? Shit yeah. But either way, Owen Wilson as Supes? Ugh. And I LIKE Owen Wilson.

Obviously the Panelologists know what they’re talking about. If you want to hear their entire spiel about Gail Simone and Dan Slott (and you really need to), you can listen to their 26th episode. Really, you should listen to all of them, though.

We don’t really defend Pickman so much as pointing out that the reviewer is an idiot. Look, I’ll gladly give you a free pass on the art comments - although HappyJack and Sexy take issue with them - but the points you raise? It’s okay to be a LITTLE confused, but if you can’t follow the story in KP, might I suggest something more up your alley?

Oh, and for those of you that don’t listen to the N3RDCasts and just stop in for my brilliant writing (hi mom!): the big news story is that the N3RDCast got picked up by an internet radio station. We’ll be broadcasting LIVE Saturday afternoons from noon to 3pm (EST) on the Cringe Humor Radio Network, so you can not only call in live, but join us in our interactive chat room and totally ruin the flow of the show (if we had one) by flashing your boobs! No manboobs, please; got enough of them already.

We’re excited about it and a little nervous. It’s one thing to not be listened to by… Well, anyone, really. But to enter an existing market full of people (ie, O&A fans) that hate your sort of people (ie, comic & video game nerds), it doesn’t really lend itself to chemistry, you know?

Well, I guess it actually does, but it’s more the sort of chemistry of “Hey, look! Ammonia! Let’s add it to this Bleach and see what happens!�
